In what can only be described as a miracle, a baby girl pronounced dead at birth ‘came back to life’ three hours later after being placed on the alter in the hospital chapel in Londrina, south Brazil. Her body was placed in the chapel by a nurse who ‘couldn’t face sending her to the morgue’, according to the Daily Mail.

Lincoln Graca Hospital records show Jenifer da Silva Gomes, 22, had a normal live birth Tuesday morning, but the baby, Yasmin Gomes, stopped breathing immediately afterward.

Doctors tried to revive the baby, but when they were unsuccessful, a death certificate was issued at 11 o’clock.  The family of the baby was devastated, the Daily Mail reported.

“She’s a little angel, a child. I just couldn’t face the thought of her being sent down to the morgue,” Ana Claudia Oliveira, the nurse present at the baby’s birth said. She asked to put the Yasmin’s body in the hospital chapel, instead of following the normal procedure of sending it to the refrigerated morgue.

“I can assure you, the child was dead. Her pupils didn’t respond to light, Oliveira said. “All her signs pointed to the complete absence of life. I saw it with my own eyes. She was blue all over, completely dead.”

At around two o’clock in the afternoon the baby’s grandmother, Elza Silva, arrived at the chapel with family friend and funeral director Rosilis Ferro. When they went to pick the baby up, her leg kicked, Ferro told Daily Mail.

“It was an incredibly emotional moment. I began to shake and I couldn’t speak, I was overwhelmed with happiness,” Ferro said. “I called a nurse who at first didn’t believe it, she told us they were just spasms. But then the baby opened her eyes.”

“People can make their own conclusions, but only those who were there know what really happened – in 20 years of medicine, I have never witnessed anything like this,” Dr. Aurelio Filipak said. He tried to save the baby for nearly an hour and signed her death certificate. “All the equipment, like the cardiac monitor and oximeter, all showed that she was not breathing and had no heartbeat.”

The baby was rushed to the nearby Sagrada Familia children’s hospital where her condition is stable in an intensive care unit.

The family plans to change Yasmin’s name to include Victoria – “victory” in Portuguese. They told the Daily Mail they believed her “resurrection” was a miracle.
