Texas YMCA bans pro-life students from using facilities

Students For Life of America in AustinA group of pro-life students was recently booted from a Christian organization’s facilities for being too Christian.

Members of Students For Life of America met up in Austin, Texas to demonstrate at the state capitol on behalf of the unborn. They arrived from all over the country in anticipation of a measure to severely restrict abortions after 20 weeks of gestation that was being debated at a special legislative session.

Approximately 56 of the pro-lifers were being housed in local churches that lacked shower facilities. Therefore, prior to their arrival, they made arrangements with the Town Lake branch of the Austin YMCA to use their showers between 9 and 10 p.m. during their anticipated week-long stay, according to a Students For Life of America press release.

“We had an agreement and that was the arrangement for the whole week,” group spokesperson Alexa Coombs said.

However, when the pro-life students arrived as scheduled, their matching blue pro-life T-shirts were apparently a huge red flag to some pro-choice demonstrators who were members of the same YMCA and were working out there.

STUDENTS-FOR-LIFE“There were some pro-abortion people working out in the gym and they saw our blue shirts and complained,” Coombs explained. “The staff told us they felt bullied and threatened by the pro-abortion customers.”

And with that, the Y reneged on their prior agreement and the following day the pro-lifers were barred from entering.

“[A YMCA employee] was very nice and respectful, but he said they had some push back from people who are pro-abortion,” Coombs said. “The staff felt threatened so they were not going to allow us to come back to use their showers.”

This caused a wild rush to find an alternative solution. Eventually, a Catholic school came to the rescue, but the offer was for at midnight, and it was located 30 minutes outside of town.

“We took the bus up there and everybody came home around 1 a.m. – finally showered,” Coombs said.

As for the Y’s decision, “We were shocked,” she said. “The YMCA is known for helping young people. They’ve always had an open door policy to everyone. We felt discriminated against because of our pro-life beliefs.”

“Unfortunately, the anger and rage from the pro-abortion protestors has created a toxic environment even outside the capitol building,” Brendan O’Morchoe, director of field operations for the pro-life student group said. “It’s really a shame that the YMCA was bullied by these people.”

The fact that this happened at a Y shocked Coombs.

“Still can’t believe the ‘Christian’ YMCA kicked us out for being pro-life!” she wrote. “If we weren’t pro-life we could still be showering there. If we were pro-abortion in orange shirts we’d still be showering there.”
