A tele-press conference was held in Washington, D.C., Tuesday announcing the formation of an alternative program to the Boy Scouts of America.
The program will be modeled after that of the American Heritage Girls, with the goal to work closely with them to provide Godly, character building programs for young men and women.
The group’s name and logo is currently in development and is expected to be unveiled at the initial convention on September 6-7 in Nashville.
John Stemberger, founder of OnMyHonor.net, a coalition opposed to the Boy Scout’s vote in late May to change the membership policy to allow openly gay boys into the organization, introduced former Boy Scout leader Rob Green as the interim executive director.
Stemberger, Boy Scout leaders from across the country and groups like Faith Based Boys met on June 29 in Louisville, Ky., to craft the new organization, as reported by NBC News.
As for sexual orientation, the group will allow gay members.
“If a young man has a same-sex attraction he would not be turned away in the program, but he’s not going to be allowed to kind of openly flaunt it and carry a rainbow flag,” Stemberger told NBC News.
As noted on the OnMyHonor web site, the membership policy will focus on sexual purity and will read, in part: “the proper context for sexual relations is only between a man and a woman in the covenant of marriage.”
Stemberger also announced that the organization he currently leads, Florida Family Policy Council, “will focus 60-80 percent of its time on helping the new program launch between now and the end of the year till the new boy’s group is fully functional in 2014.”
Today’s statement can be seen in its entirety at OnMyHonor.net.
