Although Texas Gov. Rick Perry was reticent to talk about his political future Sunday, he was all fired up about his state passing an abortion restriction bill during the special legislative session.
“We’re going to pass some restrictions on abortion,” he said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Texas is a place where we defend life. I mean, that’s the powerful message here, and that’s what we’re focused on, and politics will take care of itself.”
Perry said an earlier “mob rule” comment he made about the last vote on a bill that was thwarted had been misinterpreted. He said the comment wasn’t directed at state Sen. Wendy Davis, who attempted to “run out the clock” with her 11th-hour filibuster.
It was instead directed at the clamor from “out-of-control” observers in the gallery that brought the Senate to a standstill.
“People have relayed to me that never in the history of Texas [have] they seen that type of mob rule come in and discombobulate a legislative session,” he said.
He noted that Davis, who received national attention over her filibuster, was “a teenage mother herself” who overcame the odds and graduated from Harvard Law School.
“It’s just unfortunate that she hasn’t learned from her own example, that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters,” he said. “My point was that saving a life and letting that life come to its fulfillment and all the good things that happen, you never know who’s going to be considered to be an extraordinary individual and make that real impact in life, and that was our point that we were making, and nothing else, nothing more.”
Perry refused to comment on whether he would seek an historic fourth term as governor, but he acknowledged that an announcement would be made Monday.
