A high-powered rifle lost in the Fast and Furious gun-running scandal was used to kill a Mexican police chief earlier this year, according to internal Department of Justice records.

The police chief was shot to death Jan. 29 when gunmen intercepted his patrol car and opened fire, according to the Los Angeles Times. Police arrested eight suspects and seized a cache of weapons, including a semi-automatic WASR rifle, the firearm used to kill the chief.

The rifle was traced back to the Lone Wolf Trading Co., a gun store in Glendale, Ariz. The Times reported that the notation on Justice Department trace records said the WASR was used in a “HOMICIDE – WILLFUL – KILL –PUB OFF –GUN” – Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm and Explosives code for “Homicide, Willful Killing of a Public Official, Gun.”

Illegal buyers were allowed to purchase the firearms at the Lone Wolf store and other gun shops, under ATF supervision, in hopes of tracing them to Mexican drug cartel leaders. Hundreds of firearms were lost in the poorly run operation.

With all the other scandals swirling around the Obama administration, the Fast and Furious controversy has not made the news lately. After Congress cited Attorney General Eric Holder for contempt in June 2012 for not cooperating with an investigation into the case, President Obama effectively shut the inquiry down when he asserted executive privilege over documents at the heart of the dispute.

A Fast and Furious weapon was found at the scene when U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was slain in Arizona in 2010, and well over 200 people were killed or wounded by the weapons in Mexico, according to Mexican authorities.

As for the dead police chief, the Times reported that the ATF declined to discuss the matter. Some things never seem to change.
