Real jobs report: Full-time jobs down, part-time jobs up

unemployment-lineThe June jobs report came out Friday morning right on schedule, and also right on schedule, the mainstream media gave it a thumbs up — despite the data behind the raw numbers.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that while the unemployment rate remained unchanged from the May figures of 7.6 percent, the economy added about 195,000 new jobs. This is up 40,000 from what was expected, and this is also what the media emphasized.

“June Jobs Report Shows Steady Improvement,” proclaimed ABC News while CNNMoney reported “Hiring beat expectations.”

As Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey noted, however, “The number of people in the involuntary part-time category rose 322,000 this month, outstripping the overall gains in full-time employment.  Year-on-year, the number of discouraged workers has risen by 206,000 people as well,” to a total of one million.

Similarly, Zero Hedge reported:

In June, the household survey reported that part-time jobs soared by 360,000 to 28,059,000 – an all-time record high. Full time jobs? Down 240,000. And looking back at the entire year, so far in 2013, just 130K Full-Time Jobs have been added, offset by a whopping 557K Part-Time jobs.

But political blogger/humorist IowaHawk explained the figures in a manner that even the most hard-headed of liberals could understand, by likening the report to a Taco Bell restaurant.

I miss the days when the media tore apart the monthly job reports, finding fault to direct at the White House each time. But deep down I realize it wasn’t the media that had changed — it was the occupant of the White House.
