We celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence today, but as I look at the news, both here and abroad, I fear we’re losing that document’s significance — what it means and what it represents.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” the second paragraph says.

Society seems to have forgotten those “unalienable Rights.” Life leads the list, as it should. Yet life has slowly, but inexorably, been replaced by self-interest during the last four decades.

Forty years ago, the United States decided that a woman’s right to privacy under the 14th Amendment dictated that states could regulate — but not prohibit — a woman from obtaining an abortion.

Former President Bill Clinton famously said that “abortions should be safe, legal and rare,” and President Obama has since repeated that sentiment. No one would argue with “safe.” Liberals and conservatives will, no doubt, argue “legal” forever. “Rare,” however, seemed to have been thrown under the bus. According to LifeNews, there are approximately 3,700 abortions performed every day in the United States.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, recently introduced the “Fetal Pain Bill,” passed earlier in the House, that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of gestation in all but the rarest of circumstances. President Obama threatened to veto the bill if approved by the Senate. What happened to “rare,” Mr. President?

That same fight is now been taken up in Texas, whose Legislature is attempting to pass a similar law. It, too, would ban abortions after 20 weeks. It would also provide minimum standards for abortion clinics in the state. The goals here are to ensure abortions would be both “rare” and “safe.” But the outcry from the left has been deafening.

The horrors of the Kermit Gosnell case shocked the nation. The Philadelphia physician was recently found guilty of murdering infants born after botched abortions.

What the nation saw as an exception, Live Action, a pro-life activist group, is now proving to be the norm in the late-term abortion industry. Abortion — even late-term abortion — is fast-becoming another form of birth control.

More disturbing is a movement spreading in Europe — the state-supported killing of life after birth.

The U.K.’s Telegraph recently reported on legislation now being considered in Belgium and the Netherlands allowing the euthanasia of children in order to relieve the suffering of parents. Yes, I said parents.

In a Townhall commentary, Bill O’Reilly observed that a recent Gallup poll asked, “If more Americans were religious, would that be a positive or a negative for American society?” He noted that 75 percent thought it would be positive, despite the fact that 77 percent thought religion was losing its influence.

I don’t claim to be a theologian, but I will say this: The less value we place on human life — in or outside the womb — the more distant we become from our own humanity. We should place humanity back on that pedestal where it belongs.
