Bunglers, pay attention: Star-Spangled Banner rocked right

Madison RisingLately, American patriotism has taken a hit. Lady Gaga has seen fit to change the lyrics of “The Star Spangled Banner” to “The home of the gay.” Liberal talk show host Bill Press called our national anthem an “abomination,” and comedian Daniel Tosh said “it blows” and asked his audience, “Do any of you have it on your iPod?”

Had I been there, my hand would have sprung into the air and I would have resoundingly shouted, “Yes! Two versions!” And I wouldn’t have been lying. I have Whitney Houston’s heart-thumping, hair-raising rendition performed at Super Bowl XXV. I also have the sweet, harmonious Cactus Cuties version sung at a Texas Tech University basketball game on Feb, 9, 2008.

Last year, conservative rock group “Madison Rising,” fed up with people maligning the song, jumped into the fray with its own version. No, it’s not like Jimi Hendrix’s discordant, acid-rock guitar solo, nor Steven Tyler’s ear-splitting, screeching vocals. This is good. This is the real deal, but I’ll let you judge for yourself.

In case you’ve never heard of the group, Madison Rising burst onto the music scene in 2011. Its first album of the same name contains such songs as “Right to Bear,” “American Dream” and “Hallowed Ground.” In case you’re wondering, those songs are also on my iPod.

Here’s a video outlining the controversy, if indeed there is one:

This is the music video of Madison Rising performing the national anthem:

Of course, I wouldn’t be doing the day justice without including my other iPod versions. Here’s the late, great Whitney Houston:

And finally, the Cactus Cuties:

Have a very memorable, star-spangled Independence Day, and may God bless America!
