Minor league ball team forced to cancel ‘Second Amendment Night’

A minor league baseball team’s night of celebrating the nation’s independence and the right to own firearms has been rained out by a storm of national publicity.

The Huntsville Stars, of Huntsville, Ala.,  had planned a “Second Amendment Night” promotion for Wednesday that included raffling off two shotguns and a handgun from a local gun stores, but were pressured into calling it off by Minor League Baseball, according to al.com, the website of the Huntsville Times.

constitutionStars General Manager Buck Rogers explained, “it’s in the best interest of baseball.”

The promotion got wide attention when it was featured on USA Today’s website over the weekend, the sports site deadspin.com and others,  al.com reported.

That meant discussions with Minor League Baseball officials as well as the Stars’ Southern League.

The discussions were not positive.

“We’re part of a larger organization and we have to uphold the game of baseball. It comes before everything we do,” Rogers dutifully told  al.com.

What so bad is that Rogers was an enthusiastic supporter of the promotion before he got his talking to. And for all the right reasons.

In an interview published Friday, he told al.com:

“One of the hot button issues right now is the Second Amendment that everybody’s running from. We’re not touching base on First Amendment, Fourth Amendment, abortion or any of that type of stuff. A lot of stuff makes people uncomfortable.

“Maybe it’s time Americans basically said, ‘Hey, what’s going on? What’s wrong with this?’ Day in and day out, people’s rights are being taken away. The government is spying. We’ve got phone companies selling our information – the whole nine yards.”

You can tell from those quotes what kind of a guy Rogers must be – when he’s allowed to be.

Now he’s got to take it back, under pressure, “in the best interest of baseball.”

Happy Independence Day, Huntsville.
