Republicans in districts with strong Hispanic populations, get ready.
Leftist community organizing groups and the militant Service Employees International Union are preparing a wide-ranging campaign on critical congressmen to drum up support for the immigration bill, Politico reported Tuesday.
But could they be shooting themselves in the foot while they’re at it?
The groups’ message is clear enough, according to Politico: only a bill that includes a pathway to citizenship for the millions of illegal immigrants in the country will be acceptable.
However, House Speaker John Boehner has been firm in his position that he will not bring a bill to a floor vote unless it has majority support in his Republican caucus. The 1,000-plus page bill passed by the Senate last week doesn’t have House majority support, despite the Republican senators’ votes it drew.
The campaigns will include advertising buys on TV, radio and online as well as phone banks, Politico said.
The SEIU thinks there are enough vulnerable representatives for it to make a difference if it can get Hispanic voters fired up enough — or convince Republicans they are.
“Even though today [only] 38 members of the Republican caucus have a significant Latino presence, those 38 are enough for them to lose the majority in the House,” SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Eliseo Medina said.
“And this will keep getting worse with each two-year election cycle.”
That might be true. But it’s hard to see how a union as militantly anti-Republican as SEIU is really going to change anybody’s mind in the GOP.
And it doesn’t seem productive to try to convince Republicans to add even more voters that hate them.
