Ted Cruz blasts trigger-happy colleagues, compares immigration bill to Obamacare

Sen Ted CruzPrior to the Corker-Hoeven amendment on border security being passed Monday, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) took to the Senate floor to blast fellow Republicans for supporting the measure.

“We have seen this play before,” Cruz said. “It is reminiscent of Obamacare, yet another bill that we were told we’ve got to pass it to find out what’s in it.”

Cruz spoke in opposition to efforts of both Democrats and Republicans to rush through the bill without giving Americans adequate time to understand what’s in the bill, and cited six different areas where the Corker-Hoeven amendment fails to secure the border.

“My point is very simple: what is the rush? Why are we proceeding gangbusters?”

In conclusion, Cruz said: “Fundamentally, this is about political cover. It’s not about solving the problem. It is an approach that says: I will gladly secure the border next Tuesday for legalization today.”

Which is a play on the well known line from the Wimpy character in Popeye cartoons — “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today” — that is commonly used to illustrate fiscal irresponsibility

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, in a statement released after Monday’s vote, expressed similar concerns: “The Gang of Eight and their allies revealed their true tactics tonight. They shut down debate and blocked amendments to a 1,200-page immigration bill that no one has read.”

In response to the claim that no one has read the bill, Sen. Marco Rubio’s office released a fact sheet late Monday saying the charge is “very misleading.”

The notion that there are 1,200 NEW pages is very misleading. The tough border and interior enforcement provisions of Hoeven-Corker make up 119 pages added to the 1,100 that have been public since May.

Also, most of the text aside from the border security improvements was from already filed and publicly available amendments.

Since Friday, all members have had the text of the amendment and will have more than 72 hours to read and review the proposal before any votes.
