Jim Carrey’s career suicide: Slams new ‘Kick-Ass 2’ for gun violence

Jim Carrey is having a “Liar, Liar” moment.

His newest film, “Kick-Ass 2,” is due for release on Friday, but the actor has cold feet. Those scenes he shot way back in 2012, where he used a gun, a baseball bat and a genital-attacking dog to take on his opponents, are all of a sudden too much for him to take.

jimcarreygunDecember’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., changed everything, Carrey tweeted Sunday.

@JimCarrey: “I did Kick-Ass 2 a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence.”

It’s one thing to go see a movie and come out shock and appalled by the level of violence on the screen.

But to be an actor in a movie called “Kick-Ass 2” and be surprised at what’s in it? To be the guy who hears the story pitch, reads the script, and then physically, with his own hands, points the gun, swings the baseball bat and handles the genital-attacking dog … To be that guy and then be outraged by what’s on the screen?

And it was a sequel?

This isn’t just hard to believe. It’s literally unbelievable. And it smacks of Hollywood hypocrisy. Another lib who makes a bucket of bucks on movie violence, but tries to beef up his gun-control cred to score points with his Left Coast friends.

@JimCarrey: “My apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

The film’s executive producer was having none of it.

“[I’m] baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay eighteen months ago” Mark Millar blog-sponded Sunday. “Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called Kick-Ass 2 really has to do what it says on the tin. A sequel to the picture that gave us HIT-GIRL was always going to have some blood on the floor and this should have been no shock to a guy who enjoyed the first movie so much … Our job as storytellers is to entertain and our toolbox can’t be sabotaged by curtailing the use of guns in an action-movie.”
