FBI director contradicts Obama’s assurance of al Qaeda’s demise

FBI Director Robert Mueller may not know who’s heading up the investigation of the IRS targeting conservative groups, but he knows that al Qaeda is still a “top terrorist threat” to America.

In an appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing Wednesday, as reported by CNS News, Mueller directly contradicted President Obama when he said, “Al Qaeda and its affiliates, especially al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), continue to represent a top terrorist threat to the nation.”

In his opening remarks, Mueller said that “homegrown violent extremists” posed a threat to the nation, then added: “At the same time foreign terrorists still seek to strike us at home and abroad, terrorists today operate in more places and against a wider array of targets then they did a decade ago.”

Which is radically different from what America continues to hear from Obama.

As recently as last month, according to the Washington Times, while speaking before the National Defense University in Washington, Obama said al Qaeda has been decimated, scattered across North Africa and the Middle East and able to launch only small-scale attacks.

Obama said then the “core of al Qaeda in Pakistan and Afghanistan is on a path to defeat.”

A comment that continues a theme that was a central part of the president’s reelection campaign, when he repeatedly boasted that “al Qaeda was on the run.”

Just days before the November election, Obama said: “Thanks to [the] sacrifice and service of our brave men and women in uniform, the war in Iraq is over, the war in Afghanistan is winding down, al Qaeda has been decimated, Osama bin Laden is dead.”

And during a fundraiser held the day after the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, he declared that “al Qaeda is on its heels,” as the Times reported.

“A day after 9/11, we are reminded that a new tower rises above the New York skyline, but al Qaeda is on the path to defeat and bin Laden is dead,” Obama said.

In the end, there is little reason for the American public to have faith in the U.S. government to protect them when the Obama administration can’t even get on the same page in defining who poses a threat. These are indeed trying times.
