Letter to the Editor: Obama’s comments offend US Catholics, too

I am very concerned about the recent comments made by our president. I have a sweet 6-year-old son, and I want the best for him. I want him to have the ability to say the Pledge of Allegiance, to say a prayer, to learn the values and morals important to our family. When I was in public school, we said the Pledge of Allegiance every morning, then a prayer, and I understood the need to take responsibility for my actions.

My husband and I send our son to a Catholic school because the Pledge of Allegiance is accepted there. We as a country are expected to be tolerant of atheist groups that don’t want anything to do with God in public schools, communities or anywhere they go. We as a country are expected to be accepting of other cultures and religions, even those affiliated with radicals who want to cause harm. We as a country have to allow others to change our country, our values and our morals because that will “encourage cooperation.” I do not see President Obama saying mosques are divisive.

I have other concerns about some of our president’s, and his administration’s, decisions affecting our country, but this is not the forum. I do, however, feel this is an important concern because this is not only about my religion but my son’s future. I am not sure if the president truly understands the Catholic religion. But by attending a Catholic school, my son is not only learning about religion, history, math and other subjects, but about social issues, too, such as loving others as you love yourself and being helpful to those less fortunate, to name just a few. If that is not what a good American should be, then please tell me what our Founding Fathers meant by allowing us to have such a great country.
