Had your fill of “SNAP challengers?”
With the debate over the Farm Bill, GOP proposals to cut food stamp funding and the usual liberal hand-wringing over how Republicans want poor people to starve in the streets, Democratic congressmen have been sending out news releases touting their selflessness by taking the so-called “SNAP challenge.”
In the challenge, lawmakers or would-be lawmakers agree to try to get by on the $4.50 a day food stamp recipients in the world’s wealthiest country are allegedly living on.
It seems too bad to be true.
And according to Washington Post “Fact Checker” Glenn Kessler, it is.
In a Thursday column, Kessler first points out the obvious. SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program. That means the aid is supposed to be supplemental, as in addition to what recipients are already getting by on.
Almost all food stamp recipients – 47 million Americans – have some other way of buying food, other welfare programs or salaries they earn.
Kessler also notes that the number of food stamp recipients since Obama took office has risen by almost 70 percent. It doesn’t seem to be going down either, no matter how much the White House or media use the word “recovery.”
Newt Gingrich took a lot of heat during the Republican primary season in 2012 for calling Obama the “food stamp president.” He wasn’t far off.
Finally, liberals using numbers like “$1.50 a meal” or “$4.50 a day” make it sound like people are trying to survive at Wendy’s. “SNAP generally is intended to be used to buy food for home-cooked meals,” Kessler writes.
Government food stamps aren’t intended to be the sole means of providing food for Americans (remember the Miles Standish “you don’t work, you don’t eat” days). And lib stunts like the “SNAP challenges” are just more ways to obscure how many people already depend on the government for too much – and how Democrats in government depend on those people’s votes.
Kessler goes easy on the SNAP challenge bunk, giving it only “two Pinocchios,” meaning it contains “significant omissions and/or exaggerations.”
It’s more than that: It’s another liberal lie.
