Lawmaker stumped by simple question on abortion bill

Diana DeGette

A Democratic congresswoman was unable to answer a reporter’s question as to why she opposed a 20-week abortion cutoff, yet strove for gun control legislation if it would even “save one life.”

Reps. Diana DeGette, D-Colo. and Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., who co-chair the House Pro-Choice Caucus, appeared Tuesday to announce their opposition to the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, a bill the House passed later that day. If approved by the Senate, it will ban abortions after 20-weeks of pregnancy except in limited circumstances, according to CNS News.

During the question-answer period of the conference, a reporter asked DeGette, “Many Democrats, when they were arguing for gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting said even if this saves one life it will be worth doing.  Why not support this bill then, if it undoubtedly will save lives of babies that have been carried throughout 5 months of pregnancy?”

“Well, this is, this is — We already have laws in many states of this country,” DeGette said. “This bill is blatantly unconstitutional.”

She continued, “And, and if you look at the perceived—if you look at the stated reason of doing this legislation the Kermit Gosnell case, that gentleman was convicted of murder and sentenced to life,” DeGette said.  “Any other questions?”

Because DeGette never answered the question, the CNS reporter attempted without success to follow up. DeGette said, “No, excuse me.  Any other questions?” she asked, ignoring the CNS reporter.

If DeGette’s name sounds familiar, she was the Congresswoman who spearheaded a federal ban on high-capacity magazines, yet demonstrated at another press conference that she didn’t have a clue as to how they operated.

DeGette has a talent for appearing at press conferences unprepared and talking about things she knows little about.
