House Democrat accuses GOP members of condoning rape

A top House Democrat on Tuesday accused pro-life Republicans of being ambivalent about rape.

In a moment of staggering candor – and insulting obtuseness – Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., told a news conference that Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee must think the crime is OK because they objected to a rape exception being included in a proposed bill on late-term abortions.

louiseslaughter“I’m of the opinion now … that if you were really to question all of them, that there is a sort of continuity of thought that rape is really not so bad and that the likelihood of getting pregnant is small,” Slaughter said, according to The Hill.

The bill that prompted Slaughter’s comments would punish doctors who perform abortions on women who are 22 or more weeks pregnant.

The version approved by the Judiciary Committee last week included exceptions for women whose lives are in danger, but exceptions were later added for rape and incest victims as long as the crimes are reported, according to The Hill.

It passed the full House on Tuesday but is mostly symbolic, since the Democrat-controlled Senate will kill it.

That’s the legislative process – regardless of personal feelings, philosophical outlooks, or moral beliefs.

What set Slaughter’s news conference apart was its content.

That a difference of opinion involving the sanctity of life could evolve into a sitting member of the United States House of Representatives accusing her colleagues of condoning violent crimes against women says a lot about the liberal mindset in this country.

Will she take heat from the mainstream media for suggesting that the Republican men on the House Judiciary Committee – men with mothers, wives, daughters and their own consciences and sense of morality – can possibly think rape is OK?

Watch.
