A hidden camera caught wireless telephone providers handing out free cell phones to people under questionable circumstances. The recipients admit up front they’ll immediately sell the phones for cash so as to purchase anything up to and including illegal drugs.
A lot of discussion has been generated about the “Lifeline” program, meant to provide emergency telephone service to low-income individuals. It started out as strictly for land-line service, but as cell phones became more common, it expanded to wireless. It’s since attained the moniker, “Obama phone” and has ballooned into a $2.19 billion program funded by a tax added to everyone else’s phone bill.
James O’Keefe, of Project Veritas, a conservative activist group, wanted to know if the program was being abused. It didn’t take long for him to find out.
In one example, a Project Veritas undercover operative entered a Philadelphia Stand Up Wireless location and approached one of its employees about an “Obama phone.”
“Once you guys give me this phone, it’s my phone?” he asked. ‘I can, like, sell it and stuff?”
“Whatever you want to do with it,” the worker confirmed.
“So I’m [going to] get some money for heroin,” he said.
The employee didn’t raise an eyebrow. “Hey, I don’t judge.”
This was but one example. Time after time, wireless employees turned a deaf ear to similar confessions. So long as the employee got his commission, he didn’t care. The wireless provider has little reason to probe also, as long as the government keeps paying the bill — the bill that the taxpayer is eventually stuck with.
