While the number of news show appearances for Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., seems to be increasing, the number of Republicans listening to him seems to be exponentially decreasing. But GOP voters better take heed, he’s sending a message.
“I think we’re going to have a political breakthrough, that Congress is going to pass immigration reform,” Graham said on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. “I think we’re going to get plus 70 votes. I’ve never been more optimistic about it.”
For those who aren’t very excited about the current immigration bill floating around, that should be a call to action.
But if that weren’t enough, he goes on to give his thoughts on the 2016 presidential race. Host David Gregory asked who he saw as favorites.
“That’s a really good question,” Graham replied. “I would suggest a guy like Jeb Bush would have a really good chance in 2016. A former governor or a governor, but you’ve got Marco, you’ve got Paul Ryan. The good news is we have a deep bench, and after eight years of President Obama ‘s economic policies, and quite frankly, foreign policy, people are going to be looking around.”
While that sounded optimistic, his next words would make conservatives shudder.
“But if we don’t pass immigration reform, if we don’t get it off the table in a reasonable, practical way, it doesn’t matter who you run in 2016, we’re in a demographic death spiral as a party, and the only way we can get back in good graces with the Hispanic community, in my view, is pass comprehensive immigration reform.”
Does he really think that will do any good?
