The IRS is looking to pay at least $123,758 a year to fill an opening in the Washington, D.C., area for a “diversity and inclusion specialist,” defined in a 280-word job description as having as its overall goal “to enhance customer service, increase workplace productivity and morale, and foster innovation and efficiencies,” according to the agency’s website.That’s quite an order for an agency that collects more than $2 trillion in revenue and processes over 200 million tax returns a year.

Outgoing IRS Director Steven Miller described the IRS’ customer service as “horrible” in testimony before Congress — rarely good for the “productivity and morale” of any congressionally funded animal. And fostering innovation and efficiencies – through shortcuts that just happened to target conservative groups – is what brought IRS officials before Congress in the first place.

But the posting proves there is hope.

In describing the IRS, it notes the agency is “one of the most efficient tax-collecting agencies in the world,” but points out that its mission is “to provide the United States taxpayers top quality service by helping them understand and meet their tax responsibilities and by applying the tax law with integrity and fairness to all.” (Emphasis added.)

Considering the overwhelming evidence that liberal and progressive groups escaped IRS scrutiny while the president’s political opponents drew more than their share, applying the law with integrity and fairness requires a kind of diversity that seems scarce at the IRS these days.
