GOP senator: How did Weiner’s wife earn all that dough?

Huma-Abedin-Hillary-ClintonA loyal Hillary Clinton aide and wife to a scandal-ridden former congressman is now in the crosshairs of a Republican senator over an apparent scandal of her own — this one involving conflict of interest.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, wants to know how it is that longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin was able to earn a six-figure salary on a sweetheart deal as a private consultant while still serving as a senior State Department official, according to The New York Post.

Abedin is the wife of former congressman and current New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, D-NY, who resigned from Congress in disgrace after repeatedly lying about a sexting scandal.

The Post’s Geoff Earl noted:

The couple hauled in as much as $350,000 in outside income on top of Abedin’s $135,000 government salary after Weiner quit Congress amid a sexting scandal.

Abedin, who served as Clinton’s deputy chief of staff when Clinton was secretary of state, later became a “special government employee” who was able to haul in cash as a private contractor.

One of her private contracts was with Teneo Holdings, yet another consulting firm. Teneo was co-founded by former President Bill Clinton.

Grassley, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s senior Republican, only learned of Abedin’s dual employment status recently, and shot off a three-page letter to her and current Secretary of State John Kerry demanding answers.

He indicated his concern that her status “blurs the line between public- and private-sector employees, especially when employees receive full-time salaries for what appears to be part-time work.”

Grassley’s letter listed 13 hard-hitting questions he demanded the answers to, including, “Who authorized the change in status in your official title?” and “Who was made aware of the change in status?”

huma-abedin-anthony-weinerAlthough both Abedin and the State Department claim her actions were aboveboard and transparent, one Post source noted, “She has the Clinton disease. When your husband gets knocked down, get up . . . or else.”

If Grassley’s inquiries lead to a Senate probe requiring the former secretary of state’s testimony, and it in turn prompts yet another, “What difference does it make?” I hope the examining Senator will answer, “Ethics.”

Ethics is the difference it males. When ethics plays second fiddle to money, power or expediency, we sacrifice what little faith we still have in our government.
