A Democratic lawmaker proposes, as a part of immigration reform, to fund health care benefits for newly-legalized immigrants by stripping funds away from border security. You may want to read that again. I know I did.
Sen. Barbara “don’t call me ma’am” Boxer, D-Calif., proposes to redirect $250 million, as a start, earmarked for border security to defray the health care expenses of uninsured immigrants, according to Breitbart News.
Conservatives have held all along that they have no problem with immigration reform, so long as it’s handled sensibly. That means that two criteria must be met as a part of the deal:
First, border security must come before conferring any legal status whatsoever upon the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants already living in the U.S. illegally.
Second, those immigrants who have been granted legal status short of full citizenship should not be entitled to receive benefits such as food stamps, housing allowance or health care benefits. In its present form, full citizenship would take up to 15 years under the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” immigration bill.
The reasoning behind both criteria is to stem the tide of undocumented workers entering the country illegally, especial those who do so purely for the purpose of receiving “free stuff.” Currently, almost half the states would allow for such assistance at the state or local level. The Boxer amendment would make it mandatory for all states.
In one fell swoop, Boxer’s amendment to the bill would violate both criteria conservatives demand. In addition, Boxer wants to allow those who have received legal status to be able to access welfare benefits sooner, though not necessarily immediately.
Boxer’s proposed amendment doesn’t exactly represent the give-and-take of serious negotiation. It sounds more like the take-it-or-leave-it attitude that the White House typically demonstrates. But, of course, that;s Boxer for you.
