It was Christmas in June on Thursday after Gov. Rick Perry signed the Merry Christmas Bill that “protects Texan’s right to acknowledge traditional winter holidays on school grounds.”
School children and teachers are now safe from politically correct persecution to wish each other a Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah. Children can now safely decorate a “Christmas tree,” instead of that nonsensical “Holiday” tree.
Republican Texas Rep. Dwayne Bohac was inspired to write the bill after his young son reported how he and his classmates decorated the school’s “holiday tree with holiday ornaments,” the Houston Chronicle reported.
When Bohac contacted the school, “the school district told him they didn’t use terms like Merry Christmas because they feared litigation,” the article said.
Now, as the Merry Christmas Bill website proclaims:
Whether it’s Christmas or Hanukkah, our children, teachers, parents and school administrators should have the freedom to acknowledge these traditions in our public schools without fear of censorship, punishment, persecution or litigation. The Merry Christmas Bill guarantees that freedom.
With Santa Clauses on hand ringing sleigh bells to celebrate the law’s passage, Perry said, “It’s a shame that a bill like this one I’m signing today is even required, but I’m proud that we’re standing up for religious freedom in this state. Religious freedom does not mean freedom from religion,” the paper reported.
