Amazon deal to bring 3,000 jobs to Florida

Internet giant Amazon and Governor Rick Scott’s office late Thursday announced the company is planning to open a facility in Florida that could mean more than 3,000 jobs for the Sunshine State.

In a news release, Scott cited the news as “further proof that we’ve turned our economy around.”

amazoncart“Amazon will continue to work with Enterprise Florida on its ongoing projects, which will include a return on any taxpayer investment, and we look forward to the company’s announcements as it chooses locations and creates jobs in Florida.”

Paul Misener, Amazon vice president for global policy, said the company’s $300 million investment in Florida will help Amazon and Florida.

“We propose to create more than 3,000 new jobs and over $300 million in investment in Florida, while we work toward enactment of the federal Marketplace Fairness Act, which will protect states’ rights to make their own revenue policy choices,” he said in the statement.

A month ago, Amazon’s plans to build in Florida hit a wall over the company’s unwillingness to collect state sales taxes. That obstacle appears to have been overcome through negotiations involving the proposed Marketplace Fairness Act, which deals with state Internet sales, but details were unavailable Thursday.

House Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, issued a statement praising the news.

“The proposal announced today by Amazon and Governor Scott is great news for Florida,” Weatherford said in the statement. “With 3,000 new jobs and more than $300 million in new investment, bringing Amazon to Florida will provide a tremendous boost to our economy … I  look forward to working with Amazon and our partners in the governor’s office and the Senate to make sure this proposal becomes a reality for Florida’s families.”
