The late Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf was honored Tuesday by Gov. Rick Scott as a “Great Floridian.” Nicknamed “Stormin’ Norman,” he was best known as masterminding Operation Desert Storm, then leading an international coalition in that effort, which cleared Iraqi occupation forces from Kuwait in early 1991.
Until his passing in December, he shared a Tampa residence with his wife, Brenda Schwarzkopf, where he remained active in charity work. Brenda accepted the award in his memory, according to the governor;’s press release.
In presenting to honor, Governor Scott said, “General Schwarzkopf was an American hero who brought his leadership from the battlefield in the Persian Gulf to communities of Florida, fighting against prostate cancer and for children. His leadership and determination to remain active after retirement is an inspiration to us all. It is my distinct honor to recognize General Schwarzkopf with the ‘Great Floridian’ Award.”
General Lloyd J. Austin III, who succeeded Schwarzkopf as Commander, U.S. Central Command said, offered his personal observations of the man.
“This fitting and most-deserved award is being presented to one of our nation’s greatest military leaders and patriots,” Austin said. “Throughout his life and career spent in service to his country, General Norman Schwarzkopf exemplified the very best qualities of a Leader and Soldier. He inspired his troops and always led from the front, and without a doubt America is stronger, safer and the United States Army is more capable and confident as a direct result of his efforts and sacrifice.”
Schwarzkopf is but one of 73 individuals to have received this honor. Past honorees have included “former governors, civil rights activists, military heroes, [and] Florida Supreme Court Justices,” according to the press re;ease.
