A newly released audiotape of a maddening phone conversation between a pro-life group and an incompetent Internal Revenue Service official shows the level of harassment conservative groups faced for years.
Pro-Life Revolution waited two and a half years for tax-exempt status, which they did receive last week, but not without the typical overreach we now know the IRS used to target conservative groups.
Alliance Defending Freedom, who provides legal representation for Pro-Life Revolution released the audiotape Monday where an “IRS agent lectures the president of the organization about forcing its religion and beliefs on others and inaccurately explains that the group must remain neutral on issues such as abortion,” Life News reported.
According to Life News, Pro-Life Revolution “provides support to women in abusive pregnancy situations.”
In the article, ADF recounted how the IRS sent letter after letter to the group’s president Ania Joseph “requesting more information” and deeper explanations on the activities and charitable work of the organization.
Below, you will hear a phone call between Joseph and IRS Exempt Organization Specialist Sherry Wan from March 2012, more than a year after Pro-Life Revolution applied for tax-exemption.
Wan incredibly rambles on and on, saying things to Joseph like, “You cannot force your religion or force your beliefs on somebody else…. You have to know your boundaries. You have to know your limits. You have to respect other people’s beliefs.”
Listen to the incompetent agent incorrectly lecture Joseph and ask yourself if you can imagine Planned Parenthood ever being told the same.
