Dem. senator suggests Eric Holder should resign

In a story that has gotten little attention in the wake of the NSA surveillance controversy that broke at the end of last week, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) suggested in an interview Friday that it may be time for Attorney General Eric Holder to go.

In an appearance on Bloomberg TV’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt,” Manchin was asked if he had confidence in Holder right now as attorney general. He first responded by saying:

“Let me just say that … any public official — no matter whether it be the attorney general or anybody in public office — whenever you feel that you have lost your effectiveness, or may be losing your effectiveness, to the detriment of the job that you do, even though you’re a good, honest, sincere, hardworking person, you have to evaluate that and make a decision.”

To clarify, Hunt asked Manchin if he had confidence in Secretary of State John Kerry, suggesting that Holder “might be in a different category.” Manchin quickly responded in the affirmative on Kerry, before elaborating further on Holder:

“And I think we’re at the time now where decisions have to be made,” he added. “I just think that, basically, in light of what is going on in the country and everybody looking at it — it might be the most well-intended person with the best of intentions, but if they’re not being effective and they’re not being received, how effective is it and how good is it for the country?”

When a U.S. senator from the president’s party refuses to come to the defense of a vital member of his team, it may be the best sign yet that the writing is on the wall for Eric Holder.
