Valedictorian’s mic cut off when he mentioned Constitutional rights

A North Texas high school apparently has no problem with exercising Freedom of Religion — it both began and ended its graduation ceremony with a prayer. But the moment its Valedictorian began talking about the Constitution, the school cut off his mic.

In a move similar to the young man who tore up his own Valedictorian speech to recite the Lord’s Prayer, Remington Reimer also deviated from his prepared and pre-approved remarks. Reimer’s passion, however, was the constitution, a passion evidently not shared by Joshua High School’s administration — at least not that First Amendment freedom of speech thing, according to MyFoxDFW.

“He just said, he was talking about getting constitutional rights getting taken away from him,” Colin Radford, a fellow Joshua H.S. graduate said. “And then he said, just yesterday they threatened to turn my microphone off, and then his microphone went off.”

One would be hard pressed to describe Reimer as a nonconformist or troublemaker — in addition to being named Valedictorian, he was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy.

The school district explained its actions in a written statement.

“Student speakers were told that if their speeches deviated from the prior-reviewed material, the microphone would be turned off, regardless of content. When one student’s speech deviated from the prior-reviewed speech, the microphone was turned off, pursuant to District policy and procedure.”

Zachery Hull, another fellow graduate, observed that everyone came out a winner.

“Freedom of speech,” Hull said. “He said what he was going to say, they did what they had to do. Everyone was right.”
