If you’ve got nothing else to talk about, there’s always the weather.
Tough topics like Chinese cyber attacks on American businesses and news media and the latest threat posed by the latest nutcase running North Korea got kicked down the road, but there was some news out of the summit Friday and Saturday between President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“The White House announced that the two countries had reached at least one concrete accord that environmentalists welcomed as a potential step in combating climate change,” The New York Times reports. “China and the United States agreed to discuss ways to reduce emissions of hydrofluorocarbons, known as HFCs, that are used in refrigerants and insulating foams.”
In the Washington Post, the “agreement between President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday to wind down the production and consumption of a class of chemicals commonly used in refrigerators and air conditioners could mark a key step toward eliminating some of the most potent greenhouse gases ….”
“Both countries will try to persuade others to join efforts to slash or end use of the potent greenhouse gas.”
So, all a meeting between the world’s two most powerful nations really managed to produce was an agreement to discuss ways to wind down the use of a common refrigerant, and even go as far as trying to persuade other countries to do the same.
Now, that’s audacity.
It won’t make the questions about Benghazi, the IRS, the media surveillance or the NSA cyber snooping go away. It probably won’t even mean much to the use of hydrofluorocarbons.
But for a White House bouncing from one p.r. crisis to another, it’ll have to do.
