Soldier’s orders to stop reading Hannity, Limbaugh get Fox team hot

A 25-year Army veteran claims he’s being punished for reading Mark Levin and David Limbaugh books and affixing anti-Obama bumper stickers on his automobile — in other words, for being a conservative.

Master Sgt. Nathan Sommers has a distinguished career with the U.S. Army band. He received an Army Commendation Medal and was selected as a soloist at former First Lady Betty Ford’s funeral. But the Army is looking beyond all that to find fault with his outspoken social conservative views, according to Fox News.

Sommers first came to the attention of the higher-ups when he served Chick-fil-A sandwiches in honor of the Defense of Marriage Act at a promotion party. For this transgression, he was reprimanded with a poor efficiency report and threatened with judicial action.

After he came under the Army’s microscope, it finds more to dislike about the Fort Myer, Washington-based master sergeant, including those bumper stickers on his car and his propensity to read Sean Hannity books while traveling to and from concert dates on the bus with fellow Army band members.

“It seems like with the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell – that the Christians have been the ones who’ve had to go underground and in the closet – for fear of retaliation and reprisals,” Sommers told Fox News. “Christians feel like they can’t be forthright with their faith. They have to hide.”

A retired Naval commander, John Bennett Wells, believes Sommers is being discriminated against due to his conservative beliefs and is representing him.

“There’s no question about it,“ Wells told Fox News. “Because he is religious, because he feels that homosexual conduct is wrong for religious reasons, he is basically being persecuted.”

The gang at Fox News Channel’s “The Five” took up Sommers’ case Friday afternoon, which co-host Eric Bolling described as a “disheartening and dangerous” present-day military trend fostered by political correctness.

“This is outrageous,” Kimberly Guilfoile said, and then placed the root cause at the doorstep to the White House. “These soldiers and troops are fighting for our freedom every day, and President Obama is stripping them of their freedoms, telling them that they can’t read this or they can’t look at these materials. This is his administration.”

Andrea Tantaros claimed this same political correctness led to the Fort Hood massacre by Major Nidal Hasan. She opined that the master sergeant Sommers “is facing the last form of discrimination, which is you’re a Christian or you’re a conservative, and he’s being discriminated against.”

Juan Williams disagreed, of course, saying, “if I’m your superior and I’m interested in unit cohesion and you’re reading something that is highly politically inflammatory…”

This is a switch for Williams, in a way. Up until Friday, he — like all progressives — always preached in favor of diversity. Apparently diversity isn’t a good thing when applied to thought.

Brian Kilmeade wondered how the Army would have reacted had Sommers been asked to stop reading the Qu’ran. “The whole military would be asked to disarm!” he exclaimed.

Today’s Army: “Be all you can be” so long as it’s not conservative.
