Miss World cuts famed bikini contest after Muslims protest

Guess they’d never heard of that bikini contest.

In its 63rd year, the Miss World competition is droppings its bikini segment so as not to offend Muslim sensitivities in the host country of Indonesia, organizers have announced.

That is, they announced it Wednesday, about 10 months after Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, was named as the host city for the 2013 pageant.

miss worldNobody remembered that there was a bikini segment of the pageant last year? When it was in Mongolia?

Actually, it’s a pretty good bet that more than 100 beautiful women from countries all over the world didn’t go unnoticed when they paraded half-naked around Ordos last fall. So let’s assume Jakarta knew all about the bikini part of things when majority-Muslim Indonesia  tossed its turban into the ring to be the host city this year.

It’s an even better bet that those famed Muslim sensitivities haven’t changed all that much since 2002, when the pageant was supposed to be held in Muslim-majority Nigeria, but had to be relocated to London because rioting that started over Muslim clerical sensitivities ended up killing more than 100 people.

So, Indonesia bids to host a beauty pageant knowing its most photogenic segment will inflame an influential part of its population. It wins the bid, and its population is predictably inflamed.

And what happens?

The pageant must drop its calling card competition. It’s just the kind of “creeping sharia” story people in the West get worried about. No one decides to have a spare-ribs contest in Jerusalem then cuts the pork.

On the bright side, the bikini contest is being substituted with a sarong segment, more in keeping with Indonesia’s traditional garb.

That means more than 130 beauties, swaying in sarongs, on the beach in Bali.

If that doesn’t inflame those clerics’ sensitivities, they’ve got no imagination.
