Hillary’s role in Benghazi causes substantial drop in polls

Hillary Clinton’s role in the administration’s bungling of Benghazi has hurt her among potential voters, but still leads potential Republican presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a new poll shows.

Clinton has a 48-40 percent edge over Bush and a 49-41 percent lead over Paul, according to the Quinnipiac University poll, released May 31. Vice President Joe Biden, who harbors presidential ambitions for some reason, trails both men: 44-38 to Bush and 43-39 behind Paul.

hillary clintonClinton’s favorability rating, at a high of 61 percent in February, is now at 52, with a 42 percent disapproval rating, according to the poll.

In a release accompanying the poll results, Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, attributed the decline to public attention on the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed American Ambassador J. Christopher Stephens and three other Americans.

“The drop in her favorability is substantial among men, Republicans and independent voters,” Brown said. “One reason for her drop may be that 48 percent of voters blame her either a little or a lot for the death of the American in ambassador in Benghazi.”

Bush, meanwhile, had an even favorability-unfavorability rating of 29, with the remainder polled saying they didn’t know enough about him to form an opinion.

Paul had a favorability rating of 32 percent with an unfavorability rating of 24 percent; 42 percent said they had no opinion.

Biden’s unfavorability rating was 44, with an approval rating of 37 percent.

The poll was conducted May 22-28 among1,419 registered voters and has a margin of error of 2.6, according to Quinnipiac.
