Gibbs ridicules Issa, calls for apology to Carney

Appearing Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs called upon Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., to apologize for calling Gibbs’ successor a “paid liar” on CNN Sunday.

Jay Carney claimed the IRS scandal involved a few local “rogue agents.”

Throughout the scandal involving Internal Revenue Service agents adversely targeting conservative groups, current spokesman Jay Carney has steadfastly maintained that it was a local problem involving a few rogue agents. Evidence has surfaced indicating that the the practice went on with the knowledge, blessing and assistance of Washington supervisory personnel.

Issa told “State of the Union” host Candy Crowley “…the administration, their paid liar, their spokesperson, he’s still making up things about what happened and calling this ‘local rogue.’” It’s obvious Issa referenced Carney with that statement, although his name wasn’t mentioned.

“Well, first of all, Darrell Issa should call Jay Carney and apologize this morning,” Gibbs said, according to Politico.

Then, deciding to up the ante, he referred to Issa’s chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee as possibly the “biggest joke in all of Washington.”

Now on a roll, Gibbs kept doubling down.

“I mean, it’s a stunning thing,” referring to Issa’s remarks. “It’s why five people in this town take Darrell Issa seriously and it’s the surest bet the Republicans are very much on the verge of overplaying their hand publicly and the American people will lose interest in their side of this. They want to see the IRS cleaned up, but they will understand quickly that Darrell Issa is doing nothing more than politicizing this event.”

The IRS scandal isn’t the only time Carney has been caught playing fast and loose with the truth. He maintained that the CIA’s Benghazi timeline of events had not been tampered with other than a single minor correction. ABC eventually ferreted out the fact that those talking points went through 12 major revisions. As a result, they were scrubbed clean of any mention of al-Qaida or terrorism, and instead referenced an anti-Muslim video no one had ever heard of.
