Defiant Kerry vows to sign UN arms treaty despite opposition

knotted-gunSecretary of State John Kerry announced Monday that the United States will be signing on to a controversial United Nations Small Arms Treaty. Kerry said that President Barack Obama will affix his signature to the treaty at the earliest opportunity, despite intense continued bi-partisan opposition to it.

“We look forward to signing it as soon as the process of conforming the official translations is completed satisfactorily,” Kerry announced. He referred to the treaty as “an important contribution to efforts to stem the illicit trade in conventional weapons, which fuels conflict, empowers violent extremists, and contributes to violations of human rights,” according to Fox News.

Although the treaty, if ratified by the Senate, would not directly control how small arms would be used by the United States’ civilian population, lawmakers are nonetheless wary. They fear that such a treaty could be used as a leg up to future, more restrictive regulation.

In a letter signed last week by 130 members of Congress, the lawmakers urged the president and Kerry to reject the terms of the treaty

“As your review of the treaty continues, we strongly encourage your administration to recognize its textual, inherent and procedural flaws, to uphold our country’s constitutional protections of civilian firearms ownership, and to defend the sovereignty of the United States, and thus to decide not to sign this treaty,” the lawmakers wrote.

After the president’s approval, the treaty will require Senate ratification by two-thirds of its members — 67 votes.

“The protection of the Second Amendment is enshrined,” said Tucker Carlson, editor-in-chief of The Daily Caller’ and Fox News analyst. As a result, he sees little chance for ratification.

“I’d bet my house that this won’t be ratified by the Senate,” he said.

Nonetheless, there’s always call for concern when these things happen among Second Amendment proponents.
