Former congressional power couple announce divorce

The married couple of Congress is no longer in Congress.

And soon won’t be married.

conniemarymackFormer U.S. Rep. Rep. Connie Mack, who gave his South Florida seat to challenge Bill Nelson for Senate last year, and his wife, Mary Bono Mack, R-Calif., are divorcing, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“We are saddened to announce that we have reached the difficult decision to end our marriage,” they said in a statement published by the Times. “We have nothing but respect and admiration for each other and we intend to remain on the friendliest of terms. We appreciate the love and support of our family and friends.

Even if they both hadn’t been in Congress, it would have been an unusual marriage.

Mack is the son of Connie Mack III, the former senator, and grandson of Major League Baseball’s legendary Philadelphia Athletics owner Connie Mack. His personal life was lambasted during last year’s tough GOP primary for the Senate nomination, when opponent George LeMieux ran a series of ads comparing him to troubled actor Charlie Sheen.

Bono Mack is the widow of Sonny Bono, the entertainer and former husband of Cher. He died in a skiing accident in 1998. Mary Bono succeeded him until she she lost her bid for re-election last fall.

Their two-year courtship caused a stir when it became public in the mid-2000s. They married in 2007.

After their 2012 election defeats, both went into lobbying, according to the Times.

CORRECTION: This post has been corrected from the original. Connie Mack IV’s great-grandfather was the owner of the Philadelphia Athletics, not the Phillies. The author is a Philadelphia-area native and really does know better than that.
