First Lady praises textbooks for swapping ‘cupcakes for apples’ in math problems

First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative is praising textbook publishers for “swapping out cupcakes for apples in math problems,” in an effort to incorporate health information into the learning resources for kids, according to CNS News.

A government funded initiative started by Mrs. Obama, Let’s Move! is dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation.

“Today at the White House, we celebrated a group of educational publishers on their development of voluntary guidance to incorporate health information into textbooks and other learning materials,” proclaimed a blog post on the Let’s Move! web site this week.

“Publishers are making simple changes, like swapping out cupcakes for apples in math problems. They are also finding ways to include physical activity in lesson plans – discussing the history of little league baseball and using sports in word problems.”

Mrs. Obama praised publishers that are “voluntarily coming together to support the health of our nation’s children,” the blog post shares.

Who knew it would be so easy to tackle obesity in America? Just think those excess pounds away!
