Bob Woodward compares Benghazi to Watergate

In a Friday appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward claimed that of the three major scandals plaguing the Obama administration, the one the public should keep its eye on is the Sept. 11 attack on our foreign mission in Benghazi.

“You go to the Constitution, and the president has sole responsibility for the executive branch,” he said. “This rests on him. You were talking earlier about kind of dismissing the Benghazi issue as one that’s just political and the president recently said it’s a sideshow.”

Hammering home his point, Woodward said, “if you read through all these emails, you see that everyone in the government is saying, ‘Oh, let’s not tell the public that terrorists were involved, people connected to al-Qaida. Let’s not tell the public that there were warnings.’”

He compared the Obama administration’s edits of the Benghazi talking points to the editing of tapes in the Nixon White House during the Watergate scandal. In each instance, the American people weren’t told the truth in order to cast the White House in the most flattering light possible.

“I would not dismiss Benghazi. It’s a very serious issue. As people keep saying, four people were killed,” he said. “You look at the hydraulic pressure that was in the system to not tell the truth, and, you know, we use this term and the government uses this term ‘talking points.’ Talking points, as we know, are like legal briefs. They’re an argument on one side. What we need to do is get rid of talking point, and they need to put out statements or papers that are truth documents. ‘OK, this is all we know.’”

Although Woodward claims to be an Obama supporter, he’s also been openly critical of the president. In a book he released in September, “The Price of Politics” he claimed the president lacked “stamina” and most recently, he reminded the president that the sequester was his idea from the start.

Because of this, Woodward has himself been the target of criticism from fellow journalists. The New Republic went so far as to call him a “backstabber.”

Now that the White House Press Corps has come to the realization that chief Obama spokesman Jay Carney has been lying to them for months, perhaps the press will lay off Woodward and direct their ire where they should — at the current administration. Maybe they’ll even find the time to admit to Woodward that he was right all along.
