Pro-life groups now charging IRS with persecution

Could you have predicted it?

In the wake of the IRS admission that it had singled out Tea Party and other groups for special scrutiny, the Chicago-based Thomas More Society is challenging the supposedly neutral agency’s handling of pro-life groups who say federal agents are trampling on their beliefs.

In one case, Thomas More, a public-interest law firm that specializes in religious-freedom cases, is representing the Coalition for Life in Iowa.

abortionThe coalition had accused the IRS of threatening to withhold tax-exempt status unless they agreed to halt “political” activities, such as protesting outside Planned Parenthood offices.

Thomas More special counsel Sally Wagenmaker sent a letter to the IRS demanding the tax exempt status be issued immediately, according to a news release.

“It’s high time that the IRS be called to account for its workers’ potential to trample on our constitutional rights, through such ostensibly innocuous means,” Wagenmaker wrote.

Would this surprise anyone coming from an administration that is at war with the Catholic Church over its insurance mandate that requires faith-based organizations to pay for – in contradiction to long-standing and deeply held beliefs – drugs that can induce abortion?

Remember, too, that this is an administration that in a Supreme Court case, Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. EEOC, insisted that the government had the write to determine who and who is not a minister of a church.

None of this is happenstance.

Whether in the courts in the Tabor case, administratively through the Department of Health and Human Services, legally, through snooping the phone records of reporters – even supportive reporters — or through the sheer thuggery of using the power of the IRS to try to stamp out political opposition, the Obama White House has proven its stripes again and again.

The Thomas More Society was founded in 1997, the year President Obama was sworn in for his first term as an Illinois state senator. In his second term as the most pro-abortion president in history, it’s living up to its name.
