IRS aided Obama’s re-election, Boehner asks ‘who’s going to jail’

Not only did the Internal Revenue Service make it next to impossible for conservative groups to obtain tax-free status, but it also gave a leg up to President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.

Mitt RomneyConfidential financial information filed with the IRS by the National Organization for Marriage, including its 2008 donor list, was leaked by someone within the IRS to the Human Rights Campaign, according to Breitbart News.

NOM is a pro-traditional marriage organization, and the HRC is an LDBT advocacy group. The documents indicated that four years before the campaign, Romney made a contribution to NOM.

At the time the documents were leaked, Joe Solmonese was the president of HRC. The following day he resigned as HRC head and became a 2012 Obama campaign co-chairman. He said of the leaked document that Romney’s “funding of a hate-filled campaign designed to drive a wedge between Americans is beyond despicable.”

Solmonese added that “Not only has Romney signed NOM’s radical marriage pledge, now we know he’s one of the donors that NOM has been so desperate to keep secret all these years.”

I’m not quite sure how something can be both “traditional” and “radical” at the same time. It can be one or the other — not both. Also, Solmonese’s description of the leaked tax returns as items that “NOM has been so desperate to keep secret all these years,” is ludicrous on its face. Tax returns should always be considered confidential. Every taxpayer deserves and should demand an expectation of privacy.

After the leak, NOM asked for a criminal investigation into the matter and published documents that seems to prove that the leaked returns “came directly from the Internal Revenue Service and was provided to NOM’s political opponents, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).”

Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle noted:

NOM president Brian Brown argued in that April 2012 release that the leak was made to benefit President Obama’s re-election campaign against Romney, his GOP challenger. “The American people are entitled to know how a confidential tax return containing private donor information filed exclusively with the Internal Revenue Service has been given to our political opponents whose leader also happens to be co-chairing President Obama’s reelection committee,” Brown said.

“It is shocking that a political ally of President Obama’s would come to possess and then publicly release a confidential tax return that came directly from the Internal Revenue Service,” he declared. “We demand to know who is responsible for this criminal act and what the Administration is going to do to get to the bottom of it.”

In a Wednesday morning Capitol news conference, House Speaker John Boehner said of the IRS scandal, “My question isn’t about who’s going to have to resign.’ My question is, ‘Who’s going to jail.'”

Meanwhile, in Tuesday’s White House press briefing, senior spokesman Jay Carney stated categorically that the White House had no knowledge of the IRS’s wrongdoings.
