WSJ hits Obama for siding with unions over working women

President Barack Obama is on the verge of vetoing a bill that would be a tremendous boon to workers in the private sector — especially working mothers — a move that the country’s premier financial daily calls his “war against working women.”

The Wall Street Journal excoriated the president for promising to blackball the Working Families Flexibility Act, which would “allow employees to swap overtime pay for compensatory time off.”

The bill, which was sent to the Senate last week after being approved by the House, “would give private sector non-union employees the sort of flexibility that federal government employees have had since 1985,” according to NewsBusters. It was introduced by Rep. Martha Roby, R-Ala., a mother of four.

Roby proposed the legislation recognizing that “[p]olls show working mothers are eager for this kind of flexibility, since it lets them adjust their busy schedules for school-age children or aging parents,” according to the Journal.

However, while the president professed to be the champion of women in his 2012 reelection bid, money talks. No money talks louder than that of the country’s organized labor unions who arguable have the Democratic party in their hip pocket.

As the Journal notes:

The politics at play here is White House fealty to unions. The only way for many private workers to obtain flex-time is if a union negotiates it as part of a collective-bargaining agreement,” the Journal’s editorial board explained. Naturally, “if workers can negotiate overtime pay for flexible work hours on their own, they have on less reason to join a union and pay the dues that fund Democratic campaigns.

Ir appears as though the “war on women” is one still being fully engaged. But it’s not one waged by the GOP. It’s one brought against the American working mom by the president of the United States with the blessing of the Democratic Party.

Happy Mother’s Day.
