Guns are up, crime is down and Americans are in the dark, Pew reports

Pierce Morgan, eat your heart out.

You’d never know it from the national angst – and the frisson certain foreigners seem to feel about living in the Wild West — but the homicide rate from guns is down by almost half from than 20 years ago, according to the Pew Research Center.

Not only is the rate down, Pew found there were actually are actually fewer deaths from guns in 2010  than in 1993, even though there are are about 50 million more  people in the country, according to the Census.

In fact, Pew found, gun violence – even non-fatal gun violence — has been declining since the 1990s, along with crime in general, according to the report.

And all of this is happening while the number of guns in the country has kept pace with the population increase, averaging about one per person.

To sum up: More people, more guns, less crime.

But amid the torrent of gun-control stories, driven by an anti-gun president and an echo-chamber media, Pew found that “56% of Americans believe gun crime is higher than 20 years ago and only 12% think it is lower.”

Now, why would they think that?
