Sen. Durbin uses DHS’ utter incompetence to push immigration bill

While it would seem that the job of U. S. Customs is to check visas of those entering the United States to make sure they are here legally, apparently the new immigration reform bill is needed to see that it’s done. Even CNN’s Candy Crowley found this to be incredulous on State of the Nation Sunday.

After the Boston Marathon bombing, Department of Homeland Security ordered U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to verify that every foreign student entering the United States has a valid student visa, a U.S. government official told CNN.

Recently it was discovered that two friends of bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, may have been in the country on invalid student visas.Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said that the immigration bill being considered now will fix those problems recently revealed in the system.

“It is incomprehensible, I think, to people, that that information is available, and yet, the very people at the front lines…who say, ‘Yes, come on in’ or ‘Hang on a second and go to that room,’ don’t have the information they need,” Crowley said. “And, you know, 9/11 was, you know, more than a decade ago.”

“It’s hard to believe 12 years after 9/11 we’re having this conversation,” Durbin replied. “There is not enough coordination between these different agencies so that we know someone should not have been re-admitted to the United States.”

Durbin says that if immigration reform is passed, 11 million people “will come forward to register so that we’ll know who they are.”
