Ted Cruz challenges Joe Biden to gun debate

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, addressed the National Rifle Association Leadership Forum in Houston Friday where he challenged Vice President Joe Biden to a debate.

“I want to speak to you on three things this afternoon,” he said. “Number one, the Constitution matters — all of the Constitution. It’s not pick and choose.”

He then illustrated how the Obama administration had been doing exactly that — picking and choosing the parts of the Constitution it likes, and discarding the rest.

“Secondly, we must do everything we can to stop violent crime,” he later said. “Everyone of us here has been horrified by acts of violence and madness by deranged individuals that would take the lives of the innocent among us.”

Cruz emphasized that the way to reduce gun violence is to go after the criminal, not hamstring the law-abiding citizen.

“The third and final thing I want to say to you today is in America, the people have the power,” he continued.

After recounting the failure of the Senate to pass an expanded background check bill, Cruz said, “Let me caution you, this fight isn’t over. President Obama and Joe Biden have both been coming out saying they intend to come back at us.”

“I would like to invite the vice president to engage in an hour long conversation and debate, ‘How do we stop crime’,” Cruz said. “If Vice President Biden really believes that the facts are on his side . . . then I would think he would welcome the opportunity to talk about the sources, the causes of violent crime, who is carrying it out, and how we can do everything humanly possible to stop it.”
