Everyone has heard the urban legend that women receive less pay for the same work, and that the average woman earns only 77 cents for every dollar a male makes, but like most urban legends, it’s a lie.
Andrea Peyser of the New York Post addressed this issue in an excellent piece, in which she wrote:
The number compares the median salaries of all workers. If you compare, say, teachers to teachers, corporate honchos to corporate honchos, if you take into account women who chose to jump off the fast track to have families, the pay gap magically disappears.
In fact, the median income for young, single, childless urban women is higher — sometimes much higher — than that of men, concluded a study by Reach Advisors, a Boston market-research firm.
President Obama actually campaigned on the 77-cent lie, and women’s groups repeat it so often that it’s become a mystical mantra, true only because they want it to be true.
The 77-cent lie has been debunked so many times that to repeat it is to be either an ignorant member of the sheep class, or a politician manipulating ignorant voters.
