People are just now beginning to realize that the president’s first term in office was not the roaring success they’d expected. The way things are shaping up, his second term won’t be much better, especially the area of immigration reform.
When the DREAM Act, an acronym for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors, didn’t make it through the legislative process, President Obama simply drafted and signed an executive order to do essentially the same thing and had Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano implement it.
That started a lawsuit initiated by 10 Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who claimed that the order prevented them from following the law.
Although the court deferred a final ruling until May 6, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Conner said in a 38-page decision, “The court finds that DHS does not have discretion to refuse to initiate removal proceedings” when the requirements for deportation are met, according to Bloomberg Business Week.
Factor into that a Fox News poll conducted after the Boston bombing that indicated that 66 percent of Democrats want our borders secure before reform legislation is implemented, and the President’s immigration reform train is on a trip to nowhere.
The president keeps looking for a defining mark of his administration, something he can call his legacy. Gun control went down the tubes, and it now looks as though immigration may soon follow. The Obama legacy may very well be staring at him in the face — it’s called failure. The Obama legacy may be failure.
