Barbara Bush doesn’t want Jeb to run: ‘We’ve had enough Bushes’

How refreshing is this?

The matriarch of one of America’s premier political families’ gets asked point-blank if her son should run for president, and she shoots idea down?

On the “Today” show this morning, host Matt Lauer asks three generations of Bush women – first first lady Barbara, George W. Bush’s wife Laura, and twins Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush if former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush should aim for the White House.

Laura, being a dutiful sister-in-law, backs the idea (“He’d be terrific.”) but the potential candidate’s own mother demurs.

“He’s the most qualified, but I don’t think he’ll run. I mean, there are other families. He’ll get all our enemies, half of our friends,” she said.

On a practical level, Barbara Bush knows what the knee-jerk, unreasoning hatred of the left in this country for her family name would mean in a national election – no matter what qualities the individual has. But more to the point, she knows that in a country of 360 million people, one particular bloodline doesn’t – can’t – hold a monopoly on the kind of talent it takes to run a democracy born in the rejection of royalty.

Politics has been a family business on both sides of the aisle since the Adamses, but the idea that someone is born to a seat  is much more common on the left in this country – with its prattle about “Camelots” and “dynasties” and so forth – than the right.

And Barbara Bush’s words are something the supporters of one particular family on the left – you know, that one that crops of from time to time around Massachusetts – might learn from as well. Try to imagine someone on the “Today” show saying, “the country has had enough Kennedys.”

(On the other hand, 2008 was the first national election in almost 30 years where there wasn’t someone named Bush or Clinton on the ticket. Look how that turned out.)
