Wasserman Schultz uses tragedy to beef up Dem email list

It seemed too good to be true.

An email Monday from Florida Congresswoman and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz departed from the usual “Republicans-are-evil-so-give-me-money” line to solicit support for the emergency workers who treated the wounded at the Boston Marathon bombing. A big “Thank Boston’s First Responders” petition.

So where’s the politicking? Where’s the obligatory paean to President Obama?  Where’s the jab at Republicans? And above all, where’s the money grab?

None of the above present – unless you wonder when Boston got drawn into Florida’s 23rd District.

Instead, in soliciting signatures for the thank-you note, Wasserman Schultz waxes lyrical:

“As I’ve watched everything happening there, I’ve been completely awestruck by the first responders — the police, firefighters, and EMTs who ran toward danger without hesitation to help those in peril.

“Their courage and compassion is amazing to witness, and I’m grateful to live in a country where so many fine men and women commit their lives to protect and serve their fellow citizens.”

All true, and appreciation is merited. So what’s the catch?

The URL collecting the signatures is “my.democrats.org/Boston.”

Nothing, not the valor of those who save lives – not the thanks of a grateful nation – rises above partisan hackery with some folks. Granted, most “police, firefighters and EMTs” in Boston are probably Democrats, along with most of its public school teachers, MIT professors and dog catchers. But a state that once elected Mitt Romney governor surely has at least one or two registered Republicans among its uniformed public servants – and probably many more who would be but for patronage employment.

Will my.democrats.org/Boston be thanking them too?

(And why, a whole week after the action, do we decide to say thanks now? Someone probably figured it could be another new way to build the Organizing for America databank. In other words, money grab to come.)
