Administration’s policies toward Islamism neutered FBI, lead to deaths in Boston

Did the Obama administration’s ongoing efforts to dissociate Islam from terrorism prevent the FBI from conducting aggressive counter-terrorism investigations of Islamic radicals or those who are in the process of being radicalized, leading to the death of four innocent people in Boston?

According to U.S. officials and private counter-terrorism analysts, the FBI’s failure to recognize political Islam as a driver of jihadist terrorism may help explain why one of the Boston Marathon bombers in 2011 was not identified as a security risk, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

The FBI was warned by a foreign government — multiple sources identify this country as Russia — in 2011 that slain bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was tied to “radical Islam” but was unable to confirm the links.

“The fact is religion has been expunged from counter-terrorism training,” Sebastian Gorka, a counter-terrorism specialist, told the Free Beacon.

“The FBI can’t talk about Islam and they can’t talk about jihad.”

The Free Beacon also reports that a U.S. official said FBI policies of playing down Islamic links to terrorism resulted in the FBI not identifying Tsarnaev, 26, or his brother, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, as Islamist terrorists.

U.S. officials familiar with the FBI’s counter-terrorism policies toward Islam told the Free Beacon that field agents have been hamstrung by senior FBI leaders who act under orders of political appointees in the Obama administration, including Islamic advisers to the White House.

The FBI’s failure to properly investigate Tsarnaev is reminiscent of the bureau’s lapse in missing advance signs of the radicalization of accused Fort Hood massacre shooter, Army Maj. Nidal Hasan.

The Free Beacon reports:

The FBI had emails linking Hasan to al Qaeda operative Anwar al Awlaki prior to the 2009 shooting at the Texas Army base that killed 13 people and wounded 30 others.

The Obama administration has labeled that Islamist attack “workplace violence” as part of an overall policy of seeking to dissociate Islam from terrorism, a policy critics say fails to properly identify the nature of an enemy engaged in waging religiously inspired war and insurgency against the United States and its allies.

“Again, the FBI has been aware of a future terrorist’s escalating religious radicalization and did nothing about it because bureau policies prohibited them from doing so,” counter-terrorism specialist Patrick S. Poole said.
