In an exchange that is certain to ratchet up the level of discourse over the immigration bill proposed by the so-called “Gang of Eight,” U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio‘s press secretary, Alex Conant, likened the plight of illegal immigrants to that of 19th century American slaves.

Rubio’s spokesman made the remark on Twitter in an exchange with the Washington Examiner’s Conn Carroll, who accused the Florida Republican of “selling lies,” the Daily Caller reported.

When asked for suggestions, Carroll recommended scrapping a proposed assimilation bureau, cutting grants to leftist groups and other changes. Conant responded by saying Americans have not “had a cohort of people living permanently in US without full rights of citizenship since slavery.”

As Twitchy.com noted, this not only extends to illegal immigrants, but to any non-citizen who lives in the country permanently, including millions of green card holders.
