Authorities confirmed Friday at approximately 8:45 p.m. that 19-year-old Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had been taken into custody alive by police in suburban Watertown, Mass. Tsarnaev was covered in blood, but police were unsure when the injuries were sustained.
The arrest culminated from a call by a resident who saw bloody clothing on his property, which led police to find and surround the suspect under the cover of a small boat in the backyard. There was some gunfire, then a police negotiator coaxed Tsarnaev out of the boat alive. He was taken into custody and transported to the hospital, where his injuries will be treated.
A press conference was held about an hour later, with Gov. Duval Patrick expressing his gratitude to all members of law enforcement who participated in the successful arrest of the suspect and to the local residents who assisted. Patrick also asked that everyone keep in their thoughts and prayers the victims and their families who had been impacted over the past several days.
